Virtual Estate Planning
Protect your family from the comfort of your home.
Virtual estate planning
I understand how hard it can be to find the time to take care of important "chores" like making a Will. I make it easy. Meet with me virtually at your convenience. My goal is to make the planning process as easy as possible. That's why I offer virtual estate planning by video. You can complete the entire process without leaving home and be certain that you received top-notch legal advice.
I currently offer ZOOM, Skype, Facetime or Google Meet for video conferences. My preference is ZOOM (or Google Meet if you are hearing-impaired as the closed captioning is quite good). It is very easy to use. Once we schedule our meeting, I'll send you a link. Most of the time you don't need to download or install any special software. Just click the link and go.
My virtual estate planning clients receive the same high-quality, customized advice in the planning and drafting of all their estate documents but without the need to physically visit my office.
We can schedule your virtual estate planning meeting during regular business hours and I also offer a limited number of off-hour appointments as I know everyone's schedule is different.
Virtual estate planning that is convenient for YOU.
Whether you are calling me from from home, work or abroad, I make your important choices easy. Meeting with your lawyer should not be the hardest part of protecting your family's future.
Virtual estate planning won't work for everybody or every situation - please read my FAQ below or contact me to ask if it's the right fit.
I live by the Golden Rule - treat others how you want to be treated. I return every email and phone call, usually right away, but absolutely no later than next day! And you will always get me, not a clerk.
Wills and estates are all I do. I don't dabble. I've drafted a lot of Wills and know what questions to ask so we don't miss anything.
You need a professional - you don't know what your don't know!
Pricing is all-in — there are no nickel-and-dime charges, no ticking clocks and no deposits.

How virtual estate planning works
1. Contact me
Use the form below or click here to tell me what you're looking for and we can schedule an intro phone call.
2. Schedule an intro phone call
I will ask a few background questions about your circumstances, explain my process and make sure we're a good fit and the virtual planning is right for you. I'll also tell you exactly how much it will cost.
3. Schedule a virtual estate planning meeting
We will schedule a time for a comprehensive virtual estate planning meeting. In advance, I will also send you a welcome package that explains what kind of information to have on-hand along with a biographical info form I'll need to complete and an engagement letter for you to sign.
4. Review drafts
I'll send you drafts within 2-3 weeks of our virtual estate planning meeting along with a document guide to explain some of the unavoidable legalese.
5. Questions or changes
Email or schedule a call to address any questions or changes you might request.
6. Sign documents
We can do this by video (I will send you the paper originals to sign). I will arrange a witness. You return the signed documents to me in a pre-paid envelope I will provide.
7. Store originals
I will scan and finalize the documents (incl. swearing a witness affidavit) and return all original documents to you along with storage instructions and a list of life events to look for as to consider updating your documents.
Virtual Estate Planning FAQ
Is this for everyone?
No. It comes down to risk and technology.
If there's a high potential for a challenge or if your mental capacity may be at issue (evenly wrongly so), you should meet with a lawyer in person.
And you need to have some basic technological knowledge.
What tech do I need?
1. Access to a camera and microphone through your computer, tablet or cell phone
2. Internet access
3. A private setting (e.g. room in your house)
4. Valid government-issued photo ID (not a health card)
How long does it take?
The average time from first contact to signed documents is 4-6 weeks, but can be accelerated if needed (fees may apply).
If there's no particular rush, I will have you drafts in ~2 weeks after our virtual estate planning meeting.
What does the flat fee include?
- A virtual planning meeting as long as necessary to develop a plan that fits your life
- Follow-up emails or phone calls.
- Video signing meeting with two witnesses.
At the end you will have a professional custom-made Will and Powers of Attorney, written in plain English (as much as possible, I build my own wills, I don't use auto-generated content).
Are there any extra charges?
Not unless you choose optional complex planning as we go, such as a fancy trust which I will always tell you about in advance.
I do not charge for photocopies or mail.
I reserve the right to charge for courier service outside the province (if needed).
Do you have a real office for signing the documents?
I have a home office that we can meet at to sign your documents and I will arrange a witness. This is not my preferred option and availability is much more limited.
Can I set this up for my parents or another family member?
I don't recommend it.
No one else should be involved in their estate planning process, so unless they can manage the technology side themselves, an in-person meeting with them may be best.
