What Happens to My Apple or Google Account When I Die?
Short answer
Nothing happens by default. These accounts stay locked unless you plan ahead.
Long answer
Apple and Google don’t automatically release account access when someone dies. Even with a Will, your family can’t log in, reset passwords, or recover data unless you’ve set up the right tools in advance. Forget about giving them a Will and getting magical access.
This matters because your email account is the gateway to the rest of your digital life. Without it, your executor can’t access documents, reset banking passwords, or retrieve critical files.
I’ve created a private guide that walks clients through the best options for setting up access on the top platforms—including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook/Instagram. It’s included as part of my estate planning process, because without it, your executor may be flying blind.
